In the beginning
When Talent Q was first established in 2006, there were just four of us. Having worked together in a previous company, Roger Holdsworth, Steve O’Dell, Alan Bourne and Stuart Powell were the perfect team – bringing together many years’ collective experience in psychometric assessment, business development and software development.
From the start, we weren’t worried about being the biggest but we wanted to be the best.
Respect other people, make money and have fun - not necessarily in that order!
Roger Holdsworth, co-founder of Talent Q
Traditionally many organisations have used assessment in a piecemeal way, with little connection between assessment for recruitment, development, teambuilding and identifying potential. Our aim was to breakaway from this approach by providing analysis of personality, abilities and 360-feedback using one flexible assessment system.
We built Talent Q on a firm belief in the power of technology and in a strong client base. Our original objectives focused on:
- Over delivery coupled with excellent service
- Delivering everything online
- Right-sized assessment – not too long/not too short
- Meeting the needs of all stakeholders – clients and candidates
- Designing an engaging experience for candidates
- Focusing on the behaviours that matter most to organisations
- Ability to map to a client’s competency framework
- Using and re-using assessment data
- A simple pricing structure
- Delivering internationally-relevant assessments across a range of languages
- Innovative use of technology
The early years
During the first few years, we kept our operations fairly lean – working remotely from our own homes, and focusing on developing our products and supporting a small number of clients. With our new product portfolio in place, our client list began to grow and we started taking on new employees – an IT person here and a customer service person there.
This growth has continued steadily over the years – with new employees, clients and partners – resulting in a company with a global presence, delivering projects to clients of all shapes and sizes around the world.
A new generation
In April 2014, a new chapter was added to the Talent Q story when we were acquired by Hay Group, the global management consultancy firm. Having partnered with Hay Group since 2009, we knew that we worked well together and already had clients who found the experience of Talent Q and Hay Group a powerful combination. It therefore felt right to take the next logical step in our relationship and come together as one organisation, with the joint ambition of becoming the leading player in the assessment market.
And whilst we’re moving into a new generation that sees Talent Q and Hay Group working as one, we’ll still retain our original vision and beliefs, and will continue to build on these in everything we do.

Roger Holdsworth, co-founder of Talent Q
Roger Holdsworth was one of the world’s recognised authorities on objective workplace assessment and co-founder of SHL.
Roger spearheaded the development of Talent Q, bringing a new generation of psychometric assessment to the market around the world. In many ways, Roger saw Talent Q as the culmination of his lifetime’s experience, leading the growth of applied occupational psychology around the globe.
During his long and accomplished career, Roger was an inspirational figure for the industry and very much a pioneer in psychometric assessment. Roger combined his passion for the science of psychology at work with a strong practical understanding of how to help organisations. He had a great love of all things international – he was fluent in many languages – and this hugely shaped his outlook as a person and in business. Drawing on all of this, he was instrumental in bringing objective psychometric assessment to many thousands of organisations around the world.
Roger sadly passed away in 2011 – but his spirit and passion for assessment continue to live on at Talent Q, underpinning the work we do every day.
